Color…is this a $41 Million idea? Could it be useful in my classroom?

March 24, 2011

So the internets are all abuzz with the $41 million dollars that Venture Capital giants like Sequoia decided to invest in a tiny little company that makes the smartphone app color.

What is color? It’s a photo app that lets you and a bunch of nearby friends form a social network just by taking photos with the app. Or, it lets you discover nearby people who are also using the app to take photos. It’s sort of an instant social network of photos, videos and conversations.

So could this be useful in schools? It might be pretty neat—I could imagine my students creating a physics social network where they’d take pictures of whiteboards and videos of experiments and color would stitch them all together instantly into a physics social network, which would be pretty cool.

I also think it would be pretty cool for connecting people at large gatherings, like conferences. Still, I’m not sure that it’s worth Sequoia investing more money than it did in Google.

Being venture backed doesn’t alone justify the usefulness of any work in Smartphone app development platform.
